Ed Lenicheck (Band Teacher)
January 01, 2003
When Edwin Lenicheck retired from the Denver Municipal Band in 1996, he'd
been making music with the group for 55 years. For DMB music director Gerald
Endsley, the significance of that feat didn't pass unnoticed."The band was
founded in 1891, so it hit me how this guy had been with the group for about
half of its existence," Endsley said. "But then, music was the core of Ed's
life."Mr. Lenicheck, a Denver native and lifelong trumpeter, died of a
stroke Nov. 19. He was 80.
A graduate of East High School and the Lamont School of Music at the
University of Denver, Mr. Lenicheck had studied privately with Mabel Leick,
a former member of the Sousa Band.He was principal trumpet with the Denver
Symphony Orchestra for eight years under Saul Caston, followed by a
five-year stint as orchestra librarian.
Mr. Lenicheck then switched musical chairs - serving as band and trumpet
instructor at various schools in Denver for 29 years, completing his
teaching career at South High School.
In 1942, Mr. Lenicheck joined the Denver Municipal Band as principal trumpet,
before stepping onto the podium as conductor in 1970. After his retirement,
he was named conductor emeritus, leading two summertime programs each year -
highlighted by the Ed Lenicheck Concert, held in Washington Park.
Endsley was among the many young musicians Mr. Lenicheck inspired."I was
fresh out of school back in the '60s," he said. "I wasn't sure what I was
doing or where I was going, but Ed told me, 'You are so lucky to have music
and to know what you're after.' Everyone in this town had the greatest
respect for the guy.
"As evidence, Endsley pointed to the memorial service held Saturday at First
Plymouth Congregational Church. "I wanted to round up a band," Endsley said,
"and everyone I asked wanted to be in it. We had about 20 players, including
some of the best in town.
"Mr. Lenicheck was buried at Fairmount Cemetery along with his trumpet
mouthpiece and baton. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elaine (a
piccolo player for 43 years with the Denver Symphony); three children, Rob
of San Jose, Calif., Debbie of Gaston, Ore., and Diane of Denver; and three
grandchildren.
