Edwin "Sonny" Jackson
Veteran 9News/KUSA staffer Edwin “Sonny” Jackson has been hired by the
Denver Police Department as their new Marketing, Public and Employee
Relations Coordinator.
Mr. Jackson will start his new job in the Office of the Chief of Police,
Public Information Unit on February 18th, 2003.
Jackson’s responsibilities will include garnering support for various
department programs and policies, developing organizational strategies
related to cultural and change management, marketing and public relations.
He will also be tasked with devising various public and employee forums to
publicize services offered by the police department. Jackson will also
represent the Denver Police Department in media and employee briefings,
including crisis communications management.
Jackson, who was born in Denver and graduated from South High School in
1977, lives in the West City Park neighborhood in Denver. Mr. Jackson has
distinguished himself as a professional journalist with over 20 years
experience in television news coverage. He most recently served as the
Assignments Manager at local NBC affiliate, KUSA Channel 9.
Chief Gerald Whitman said, “Jackson has built a local and national
reputation for integrity and results in the area of local news management,
photojournalism and community involvement. His professional expertise will
enhance the image of the Department and help us get the positive recognition
that we deserve ”Mr. Jackson’s qualifications include:
Bachelor of Science Degree from Tennessee State University, Majoring in
Speech Communications and Theater
Awarded the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for a documentary on the
historic Five Points district of Denver titled “Making the Points”Ø Ten Emmy
awards for documentaries and investigative news reports
Member photojournalist of six-time National Press Photographers Association
“Television of the Year” Award
Vice President and board member of Colorado Chapter of the National
Association of Black Journalists
Board member of Denver Partners, a mentoring organization for at-risk youth
Member of the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences,
Heartland Chapter
Mr. Jackson is an accredited aerobic spinning instructor whose interests
include physical fitness, traveling, and his dogs.
