Harry Settles, a professor at the University of South Dakota, was a bicycling enthusiast, who participated in many races. He raced in and around New York City when he lived there and in Colorado, where he spent many summers.

"He got interested in races and trained for them," said his wife, Ann. "He got his sons interested in racing, and they started riding when they were young."

Harry E. Settles, 58, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, in his home after a long battle with cancer.

In addition to racing bicycles, he also assembled his own. He would buy the frame, handles, seats and put it all together, his wife said.

Settles also enjoyed mountain climbing when he was growing up in Colorado, and he got his family started on downhill skiing when they lived in New York.

He was an avid sports fan who had season tickets to USD Coyote sporting events.

"He sure liked to watch football, baseball and basketball on TV, "Ann said.

Harry E. Settles was born Dec. 19, 1940, in Denver. He graduated in 1959 from South High School in Denver and attended Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind., graduating in 1963.

He attended graduate school at Tulane University in New Orleans, graduating with his doctorate in 1967.

He married Ann Rovelstad Oct. 21, 1967, in New York City.

He taught at New York Medical College for 11 years.

He came to the University of South Dakota in 1978 and was an associate professor of anatomy. He taught and did research for USD

He liked the fact that the school wasn't too big and that he could' get to know the students better,his wife said.

He was a member of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists and the American Association of Anatomists, and several other professional organizations.

He was a member of the U.S. Cycling Federation and the Bicycle Racing Association of Colorado. In his younger years he was an Eagle Scout.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons: Robert of Chicago, William of Vermillion and John of Omaha; two grandchildren; one brother, Philip of Denver and one sister, Jean Settles of Denver.

Memorial services begin at 4 p.m. Friday at United Church of Christ in Vermillion.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Harry Settles Scholarship Fund, care of the University of South Dakota School of Medicine.

Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion is in charge of arrangements.
