Dan DeTemple
Carl DeTemple, general secretary of the 1976 Denver Olympic Organizing
Committee, passed away five years ago knowing the 2002 Winter Olympics would
take place in Utah. He also knew that his son, Dan, would volunteer
to work on the Games. "Dad was part of the Denver Olympic Organizing
Committee all the way until 1972," recalled Dan, the DeTemple who left
Colorado to run his company in Park City, Utah. "It was a very crazy time. I
remember having community debates in the lunchroom in Denver South when I
was a high school senior. It was very frustrating, and there was a heck of a
movement of people against it." Dan, who volunteered as a "snow stepper"
smoothing out the "divots" in the landing strip at the aerial competition,
said Colorado "blew it" by not hosting the Olympics. "If you look at what
has happened over here, I can't think of a single negative," Dan said. "This
is one of the coolest things we've been involved in." Carl eventually moved
on from the loss of the Olympics, Dan said. "It was a big disappointment,
but he wasn't bitter."
Michael Dire
Is this the same "Dire"?
Bonnie Brae Tavern
710 S. University Blvd.
(303) 777-2262
Carl Dire converted his gas station into a tavern in 1934, installing had
four booths and a bar with eight stools. Carl’s wife, Sue, did all the
cooking. Hamburgers, beers and shots of whiskey cost a dime. Dire’s sons
Michael and Henry had to enlarge the place to accommodate the crowds who
come for the homemade pizza, prime rib and spaghetti dinners. Generous
portions, reasonable prices and legendary pizza make this the neighborhood
favorite. The décor is well-scrubbed linoleum floors and leatherette booths.
Grandsons Michael and Dick still run this neighborhood classic.
