Ralph Dergance
Littleton, CO

Several readers called or e-mailed the Wacky Questions Research Center to point out that the McDonald's at 11025 E. Colfax Ave., Aurora, wasn't the first set of golden arches in the metro area.

"I am a 1959 graduate of South High School in Denver," wrote Ralph Dergance of Littleton. "One of our biggest adventures in the days of closed campuses was sneaking off to McDonald's at the corner of East Mississippi Avenue and South Colorado Boulevard for lunch." He and the others who contacted us are correct. A McDonald's spokeswoman said she understood our question to mean the oldest, which describes the Colfax restaurant, not necessarily the first, which was the South Colorado Boulevard spot. That one was built in 1957 - three years before the McDonald's on East Colfax - and closed in 1985; a Boston Market now stands at the site.
